In a pair of Twitter threads, Texas Tribune assistant director for audience Bobby Blanchard outlined the responsibilities of audience journalists at his publication:
what does an audience journalist do, a longer thread
when i tell people i am a journalist, they ask what i write about.
i tell them i run audience for the @TexasTribune. that means i oversee parts of our distribution, social and newsletter strategy. then their eyes glaze over.

The work includes but is not limited to ensuring that relevant Texas Tribune content is present on the platforms used by each of the organization’s chosen target audiences.

In a previous Twitter thread, Blanchard provided a simple way to think about the fundamental loop of audience engagement:
This is the fundamental loop of Audience Engagement Journalism
1). You ask your readers for help doing journalism
2). Your readers answer your questions
3). You use those answers to empower / inform your reporting
4). You report back out to the community that helped you
