Bingo: Reporting in Indian Country and avoiding stereotypes

NAJA came up with an innovative and engaging way to discuss harmful stereotypes and tropes often employed in stories on Native American issues.

This tongue-in-cheek bingo board is filled with cliches like “alcohol,” “a warrior,” “a casino” and “reference to the ancestors.” The card instructs: “If you score a ‘bingo,’ consider killing your story and contact a consultant at the Native American Journalists Association for advice on ways to improve your storytelling in indigenous communities.”
