How is the decline in trust affecting news consumption habits?

Declining trust is prompting audiences to change their news consumption behavior, including checking multiple news outlets to verify information.

A global online survey of Reuters.com users in the spring of 2017 found that the erosion of public trust in journalism has altered audience perceptions and behavior in multiple ways, including prompting more than half of respondents to check multiple media sources for corroboration on breaking news. Respondents also said their trust in social media as a reliable source of news had declined, and that they often turn to a trusted new source or sources to confirm information they find on social media. They blamed political factionalism and social media for fueling “fake news” and held news outlets primarily responsible for stopping its spread.
