Four steps to addressing a lack of diversity

CJR takes an incredibly broad issue and divides it into four basic categories, making it more manageable to prioritize diversity efforts.

Once you’ve committed to addressing a lack of diversity in your newsroom, it can be daunting to decide where to start. Columbia Journalism Review editors divide the issues into four steps:

  1. Acknowledge there is a problem
  2. Consciously work to overcome barriers to entry
  3. Tell stories minorities want to read and
  4. Focus on retention.
