Stop saying you’re bad at math

Don’t fear math. Learn to use numbers and simple math to make your stories stronger, clearer and more vibrant.

Most newsroom math is relatively simple arithmetic, algebra and statistics. (No trigonometry or calculus needed!) Learn how to calculate percent change, the difference between median and mean (and when to use them), and the language of probability. Understand how to talk about numbers without confusing or scaring off your readers (limit the number of digits in a sentence or paragraph), and how to talk to graphics artists about the best way to present your data. In other words, stop being afraid of math and numbers and start using them to make your stories better.
