How to use a Facebook group to build a community

NPR built a personal finance Facebook group that attracted more than 12,000 members within six months and became a community operating almost entirely without NPR’s involvement.

Facebook can be a hugely important piece of your community-building approach. While publishers often consider Facebook primarily for driving traffic to articles, consider ways to build a community around a certain topic of interest using the social giant. NPR found that creating a Facebook group around an important topic—retirement and personal finance in their case—attracted a loyal group that operates without much need for moderation by NPR. According to an article by Nieman Lab, NPR regularly posts links to a series on the topic, but most of the popular posts have been started by members.
