A closer look at the important work of social and audience editors

Audiences cannot be an afterthought.

Table Stakes is a manual and program designed to accelerate journalism’s shift to digital from print, help newsrooms evolve their practices, reach new audiences and better engage their communities. The second of seven Table Stakes encourages newsrooms to publish and promote content on the platforms used by each of their chosen target audiences.

And yet too often, as Samantha Tomaszewski wrote in a post for Poynter, “Social is an afterthought. Audience isn’t necessary. And clearly this kind of mentality is seeping into the advice that is being given to young journalists. It’s a cycle that needs to be broken.”

The post challenges journalists to stop invalidating careers in the audience and social media space and to, instead, better understand the responsibilities that often come with those roles, including but not limited to:

  • Copy editing
  • Data mining
  • Graphic design
  • SEO optimization
  • Strategy
  • Crowdsourcing
