How to build relationships with community? There’s a guide for that

In this new guide, engagement practitioners Adriana Gallardo, Kavolshaia Howze, Terry Parris Jr., and Natalie Yahr share insights on building relationships, building trust, finding people, and staying accountable.

Gather, the online community of practice for engaged journalists, has released a new guide that leverages the insights of experienced engagement practitioners to share good practices related to building relationships and trust, finding sources and staying accountable to community.

The engaged journalists sharing their expertise are engagement reporter Adriana Gallardo (ProPublica), video producer Kavolshaia Howze (Reckon South), engagement director Terry Parris Jr. (The City), and reporter and podcast producer Natalie Yahr (The Capital Times).

With each section of the guide, you’ll find a blend of the experts’ insights and short lists of resources.

When it comes to listening, for example, tips include tailoring interview style to different people, repeating back what you’ve heard from folks and checking out additional resources from the American Press Institute and the Listening Post Collective.
